The Amylase test measures the level of the amylase enzyme in your blood. This enzyme is primarily produced by the pancreas and salivary glands to help break down carbohydrates into simple sugars for digestion. While a small amount of amylase is always present in the bloodstream, a significant spike typically indicates that the pancreas is inflamed, damaged or blocked. - Lipase — more specific to the pancreas. Stays elevated longer (7–14 days). Better for diagnosing pancreatitis when presentation is delayed (beyond 48 hours of symptom onset). Preferred by most clinicians for pancreatitis diagnosis.
- Best practice — both Amylase and Lipase are typically ordered together for the most complete assessment of acute pancreatitis. A normal Amylase with elevated Lipase still confirms pancreatitis.
