What is a Serum Electrolytes (Na, K, Cl) Test?
The Serum Electrolytes test measures the levels of three vital minerals in your blood: Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+) and Chloride (Cl–). These electrically charged minerals are essential for maintaining proper fluid balance, regulating blood pressure, transmitting nerve impulses and ensuring correct muscle function — including the heart muscle. - Hypernatraemia (Na above 145 mEq/L) — High sodium. Causes: dehydration from fever, diarrhoea or reduced water intake, diabetes insipidus, excessive sodium intake. Symptoms: intense thirst, dry mouth, confusion, muscle twitching.
Potassium Imbalance — Hypokalaemia and Hyperkalaemia
- Hypokalaemia (K below 3.5 mEq/L) — Low potassium. Causes: diuretic use, prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, poor dietary intake, Cushing's syndrome, magnesium deficiency. Symptoms: muscle weakness, cramps, constipation, cardiac arrhythmias. Below 3.0 mEq/L is dangerous.
- Hyperkalaemia (K above 5.0 mEq/L) — High potassium. Causes: Chronic Kidney Disease, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, Addison's disease, massive tissue breakdown (burns, rhabdomyolysis). Symptoms: muscle weakness, paralysis, life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Above 6.0 mEq/L is a medical emergency.
